Second Wind

May 15, 2009

Thomas Weisel is featured in the book Second Wind: The Rise of the Ageless Athlete in the Chapter 2, The Comeback.  Introduced as “Thomas Weisel: Master of the Universe”

Bergquist describes Weisel’s early life as a skater and his experience as both a skier and cyclist.

According to the book, Weisel has a reputation for being fiercely competitive in his business endeavors, and “he approached cycling in the same way.” Despite his busy schedule he wasn’t content to just “pedal on the weekends.” Instead he contacted Eddie Borysewicz, a coach of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic teams to help him train effectively.  Weisel also attended Borysewicz’s camps, training with some of the top riders in the country.

Specializing in short races, he won national and world champions, including the kilo in the World Masters Championships in 1991 at the age of 50.

Second Wind was written by Lee Bergquist and published in 2009. A compilation of 18 stories about men and women who are true athletes in the finest sense of the word, it reminds us of the vast potential of the human body.
