BJP-Online: “Inside the New San Francisco Museum of Modern Art”

Jun 13, 2016

The British Journal of Photography’s feature on the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art focuses primarily on its new photography inclusions. The entire third floor of the new SFMOMA will be the Pritzker Center for Photography, dedicated solely to photography. The space spans 11,000 square feet, making it “probably the largest museum exhibition space dedicated to the medium in the US.”

A “museum within a museum,” the Pritzker Center includes a thousand items loaned or donated to it since the museum first closed for construction in 2013. A print center study is attached to the Center so that scholars can look at items in the collections more closely. BJP’s feature describes some of the exhibitions in the Pritzker Center, like California and the West: Photography from the Campaign for Art, which runs until September 16th. California and the West features works by Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Lewis Baltz, Lee Friedlander, and more.

This gallery ties closely to other galleries in the museum which feature art specifically from California. These exhibits will include art pieces on loan to the museum from Thomas Weisel’s collection. The museum celebrates California-based artists and California-based donors and collectors with these new exhibits.
